Jakarta Gears Up to Realize Climate Resilience through Collaborative Action

The Jakarta adminitration is committed to realizing climate resilience through various concrete actions and collaborations with multi-stakeholders, including the government, community, business world, and academia.

One of the efforts to make collaboration to accelerate climate change action is to form a team under the legal protection of Governor Decree number 96/2020 on the Work Team Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate.

Jakarta Environmental (LH) Agency Acting Head Syaripudin disclosed Jakarta was committed to being climate resilient. Besides reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it also aimed to increase community resilience in the face of climate disasters.

"Recently, Jakarta has developed an initiative that is easy and fast to achieve climate change action and updates its climate change action plan. It will then be stipulated as a Governor's Instruction on Climate Disaster Impact Management," he expressed, Sunday (3/14).

He explained that he had previously held a focus group discussion (FGD) attended by 109 participants to discuss short-term climate disaster mitigation actions. The agreed actions divided into two categories, namely, mitigation actions and climate change adaptation.

Then several mitigation actions had been agreed upon, among others, the preparation of carbon emission reduction targets, accelerating the development of climate change mitigation action plans, and managing a carbon emission documentation and reporting system and a public information system, which aimed to reduce carbon emissions.

"We also agree on various sectoral actions to reduce carbon emissions in accordance with the various sectors that are the main contributors to carbon emissions in Jakarta, such as the construction, transportation, AFOLU (agriculture, forestry, and other land uses) sectors, and waste management," he explained.

He detailed the steps to reduce carbon emissions in the construction sector were executed by encouraging the application of green building principles and efficient use of energy in buildings.

"Reducing carbon emissions in the construction sector is prioritized for buildings and the use of energy-efficient lighting on arterial and neighborhood roads," he continued.

He added the reduction of carbon emissions from mobile sources was implemented through improved management of the transport and mobility system and promoted shifts to public and low-emission modes of transportation.

Meanwhile, the reduction of carbon emissions from the liquid and solid waste processing sector was through increasing community participation in reducing waste from sources.

As for the reducing carbon emissions through providing green open spaces and planting plants that could absorb carbon emissions more optimally was also important.

"Further, it is necessary to deliver material on climate change dissemination and collaborate with strategic partners in efforts to mitigate climate change," he added.

He went on to say that the agreed adaptation and disaster risk reduction actions included climate disaster risk reduction by implementing action and education on climate change disaster response, climate disaster risk reduction by optimally utilizing and harvesting rainwater and managing floods in an integrated manner.

It was also necessary to strengthen the food security system in facing the impacts of climate change and the risk of climate disasters, efforts to protect coastal areas and Thousand Islands against the impacts of climate change and the risk of climate disasters.

"No less important is the strengthening of social protection for people who are vulnerable to climate disasters through capacity building, encouraging MSMEs, improving health services, and providing easy access to public facilities," he closed.
